The photographs are mainly scaled on a landscape format that accentuates the endlessness of the sea and the sky, magnifying the contrast between the immensity of nature and the tiny presence of humans, passing actors in the infinity of time.

The individuals he catches a glimpse of naturally exude tranquility and peacefulness. They seem to connect in a silent communion, surrounded by a protective sphere where the craziness of the world has stopped for a moment. The boundlessness of freedom emerges in every shot, awe-inspiring.
Patrick’s incomparable touch transforms this exhibition into an heartening journey, urging every one of us to take a deep breath of serenity and recall the quintessence of life.

“The Lines That Remind Me Of You” is Agung’s first solo exhibition in four years. This exhibition reveals his return in optimism in art, after feeling cynical about it in the past.

While working on the concept of the show, Agung explores a rich variety of medias. From drawing on paper, to watercolor and iron installation, Agung Kunrniawan presents his great artistic diversity. The theme of this exhibition is the memory of the past. To Agung the memory is a bridge connecting the past and the present; it becomes the foundation of the existence of one’s identity today. Remembering is not an activity of recording what has happened in the past, rather it reconstructs those memories: creating a theater in the mind by collecting scattered memories and reconstructing them to become a “unity”. In his iron installations Agung Kurniawan explores memories that are often blurred. This is showcased in the light giving shadow when hitting the iron installations. Then reconstructed onto the walls has blurred lines and shadows. This questions if there is a border between reality and imagination?
Lines are important element in Agung’s works. Many stories are told through the lines from his lost family, his love of using watercolor, and his view on Indonesian contemporary art which are composed in the simple way through lines. In the past Agung’s works were about socio-political issues with horrible narration and characters. However, his works are visually tamer now and still critical.
This solo exhibition gave Agung Kurniawan enough room to explore ideas and make the final decision about exhibition content. With a distinctive new direction, this show is expected to receive great excitement in the Indonesian artworld.

On the contrary, in presenting romanticism or dramatizing reality in the contemporary art contexts, the artworks from the group fundamentally present criticism towards the phenomenon in the daily lives of ordinary people. They have positioned photography as a medium to present ideas and imaginations, to play with reality through visual images that are humorous and not dramatized. At the same time they question photography as a medium in the contemporary art world which its existential adjacent to the rapid development of technologies for producing visual images. The rapid change in technologies encourages photographers to adapt their perspective and ideology on their roles in social lives. They have observed how photography became the most democratic medium for the general public, particularly now when technology is less costly and easier to access.

In the present art scene, ideas that are introduced by MES 56 have become one separate genre on visual arts in Indonesia, which in the last two years, became widely spread and exhibited in many commercial galleries. On the other hand, there are still discussions amongst audiences on how to ‘perceive’ the new trend that is seen as a radical new perspective on photography. All the more, this question also emerges amongst artists, curators and critics. In a certain ways, MES 56 artworks are placed into something subversive.

The exhibition explores ideas about the camera itself, which has always been defined only as an object (tool). Conversely, the exploration on the camera notions a new ideology in photography. In realizing this design, they focus on how a camera became a representation of how to perceive the world; a representation on “how to see” (the way of seeing). Each artist questions their own relationship with the camera, how they define photography and how they present basic questions on introducing new ideology in photography.

All of the exhibited artworks in “On Camera” deal with layers of reality that now develops beyond their position as representations of what is here and now, what is actual and recent. The relationship between the layers of reality with the context of lens and camera, questions on memories, reconstruction of the past, and visualization of the future became the main ideas that are put forward by the artists. Relating to the development of technology, the artists demonstrate how easy it is to play with reality: re-create, manipulate, control and freeze moments. What is identified as “reality representation” itself, has transformed into something of a wider scope; starting from daily practical lives, objects and still life, to landscape and architecture. The broad scope of this visual theme shows similarities and differences of each artist as a group, especially their expressions in responding the social theme and cultural landscape of contemporary society.

While underlining the political value of a camera as a medium, and how it is put to use in the contemporary art, at the same time, the exhibition also captures, in a unique way, the current reality of the daily lives in the global society. Consequently, in exploring the possibility of breaking the limit of a camera and the definition of its function, this artist collective is setting its foot as an influential group in the Indonesian contemporary visual art scene.

Krisna Murti (b. 1957) is an artist particularly working on multimedia and general studies regarding digital experimentation for artwork creation. “Essays on Video Art and New Media: Indonesia and Beyond” is the first compilation of his essays published earlier in newspapers, magazines and exhibition catalogs.

The South Project is a framework for exploring south-south dialogue. Rather than always looking north for ‘international recognition’, the South Project aims to foster lateral exchanges between the re-emergent cultures of the south. The project extends existing cultural relations by activating: short-term residencies for cultural practitioners from Australia and other southern countries in Indonesia; the mutual development of collaborative cultural projects; and focuses on attracting the participation of a wide audience of public, exhibition viewers, workshop participants, students and general public.
