The photographs are mainly scaled on a landscape format that accentuates the endlessness of the sea and the sky, magnifying the contrast between the immensity of nature and the tiny presence of humans, passing actors in the infinity of time.

The individuals he catches a glimpse of naturally exude tranquility and peacefulness. They seem to connect in a silent communion, surrounded by a protective sphere where the craziness of the world has stopped for a moment. The boundlessness of freedom emerges in every shot, awe-inspiring.

I Nyoman Darya, mengawali kariernya di seni rupa, dengan melibatkan diri dalam sebuah biro iklan swasta. Darya yang asli Bali, alumnus ISI jurusan Desain Komunikasi Visual. Ketertarikannya dengan lukisan sudah cukup lama, dia cukup intens membaca fenomena dan kejadian-kejadian di Indonesia dan dunia. Melihat karya-karya I Nyoman Darya yang disajikan dalam pameran ini, akan membuat kita merasa seolah-olah sedang bercermin. Karena mungkin, citra hedonisme itu telah melekat pada diri kita masing – masing. Sepuluh lukisan yang hadir membawa serta ‘lukisan di balik lukisan’, apa yang kita tangkap secara visual membawakan detail, komposisi, satire dan keindahan. Tapi di dimensi sebaliknya, sebuah ‘lukisan yang lebih kompleks’ tersaji memenuhi ruang imajinasi kita. Dan kisah yang tersirat di balik lukisan itu akan mengemuka dan menggedor nurani kita sebagai manusia. Justru di sinilah kekuatan sesungguhnya dari lukisan-lukisan Darya ini. Makna dan sentuhan halusnya akan dicerap lebih mendalam oleh siapapun yang melihatnya tak hanya dengan mata.

“The Lines That Remind Me Of You” is Agung’s first solo exhibition in four years. This exhibition reveals his return in optimism in art, after feeling cynical about it in the past.

While working on the concept of the show, Agung explores a rich variety of medias. From drawing on paper, to watercolor and iron installation, Agung Kunrniawan presents his great artistic diversity. The theme of this exhibition is the memory of the past. To Agung the memory is a bridge connecting the past and the present; it becomes the foundation of the existence of one’s identity today. Remembering is not an activity of recording what has happened in the past, rather it reconstructs those memories: creating a theater in the mind by collecting scattered memories and reconstructing them to become a “unity”. In his iron installations Agung Kurniawan explores memories that are often blurred. This is showcased in the light giving shadow when hitting the iron installations. Then reconstructed onto the walls has blurred lines and shadows. This questions if there is a border between reality and imagination?
Lines are important element in Agung’s works. Many stories are told through the lines from his lost family, his love of using watercolor, and his view on Indonesian contemporary art which are composed in the simple way through lines. In the past Agung’s works were about socio-political issues with horrible narration and characters. However, his works are visually tamer now and still critical.
This solo exhibition gave Agung Kurniawan enough room to explore ideas and make the final decision about exhibition content. With a distinctive new direction, this show is expected to receive great excitement in the Indonesian artworld.

Tekstur adalah sifat khas suatu permukaan sebuah bentuk. Dan, struktur bermakna sebagai cara mencipta, membangun, atau memandu beberapa bentuk. Pada karya-karya Anggar Prasetyo, tekstur dan struktur itu bukan hanya bertebaran, tetapi menjadi pilihan utama dalam perwujudan karyanya sebagai ‘apa yang tampil’.

Beragam permukaan benda diamati, dikaji, dan ditampilkannya dalam lukisan. Setidaknya, kita bisa melihat pertumbuhan eksplorasi Anggar pada pengkajian tekstur batu, kain, kertas, dan beragam tekstur lainnya. Pertumbuhan pendalaman ini tidak hanya menyoal tampilan tekstur belaka, tapi juga pada persolan teknik. Teknik pada lukisan Anggar Prasetyo adalah pengutamaan eksplorasi. Sangat banyak pemirsa lukisan Anggar Prasetyo yang menduga bahwa tekstur itu adalah tekstur riil rabaan, tetapi ternyata itu hanya ilusi tentang rabaan. Sebuah teknik yang, bukan hanya tinggi, tapi menjebak mata kita untuk berasosiasi dengan realitas rabaan.

Melihat karya-karya Anggar Prasetyo yang dipamerkan di Tembi Contemporary dalam pameran Texture | Structure tentu sedang memainkan ilusi kita. Pengamatan kita yang tidak sesuai dengan pengindraaan kita telah diperdaya Anggar Prasetyo dengan menghadirkan kekuatan teknik pada lukisannya. Sebuah stimulus visual yang mengasyikan mata, yang kemudian menggoda indera rabaan kita untuk menyentuh lukisannya. Lalu, kalau kita merabanya, maka tipuan itu telah menjebak kita. Inilah sebuah permainan yang mengasyikan itu
Tentu saja, bukan soal tipuan yang jadi fokus kajian Anggar Prasetyo. Kita bisa menelusuri kenikmatan mata itu pada irama, perulangan, roncetan (gradation), kelainan, kecengcahan (contrast), kerapatan, dan segala unsur visual lainnya. Realitas unsur visual ini melahirkan unsur pertalian dan unsur peranan, misalnya tentang kedudukan, ruang, gaya berat, dan raut (shape).

Di tengah-tengah gemuruhnya seni rupa naratif yang memuliakan muatan. Tiba-tiba kehadiran Anggar Prasetyo menyadarkan kita, bahwa salah satu nilai seni terletak pada elemennya itu sendiri. Kita bisa merasakan bagaimana pergulatan Anggar Prasetyo untuk tetap kukuh pada ideologi estetik formalistiknya di tengah-tengah arus besar naratif itu.

Valentine Willie Fine Arts Singapore is proud to present Temple of Threshold, a solo exhibition by Bandung-based artist Albert Yonathan. The exhibition will feature Yonathan’s recent works that cover his diverse artistic practice, from ceramics sculptures, installation, drawings, to performative, site-specific work that responds to the gallery situation.

Albert Yonathan (born in Bandung, 17 June 1983) has continued working with ceramics as the main medium of his practice since he graduated from the Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology in 2007. Compared to other Indonesian artists in his generation, his approach toward the material is rather unique and pensive. Yonathan personally considers the process of building and casting three-dimensional forms from the amorphous, natural clay as something that represents impalpable transformation. From mud processed into clay, moulded or cast it with bare hands into shape, and burnt to become a sculptural objects that could encode meaning through human craftsmanship and perception, the transformation always involves a totality of nature’s power, which is often unexpected and surprising.

From such an understanding, Yonathan has developed visual idioms that relate to the idea of the ‘liminality’, namely a state of transition at the boundaries. He persevered with creating ceramic object representing an imaginary character or a creature that is a combination of two or more living existence—human, animal or plants simultaneously. His works often appear in arrangements of hundreds of ceramic cast modules in geometric outline such as triangle, circle, hexagon or square. Since the method of ceramic casting can never produce sameness as found in mass industrial products, Yonathan proposes the idea of singularity in the life cycle of universe. While suggesting the power of collectiveness in cosmos, the repetitive appearance of the works also stress the idea of a spiritual contemplation on the values that transcend the visible reality.

As we take a step into the new year 2011, Tonyraka Art Gallery presents Teja Astawa Solo Exhibition, a young artist from Sanur, Bali whose artwork expresses visual uniqueness. His artwork representation is a development of wayang art language, the ideas of which are dug out of his childhood subconscious memories when he played with kamboja leaves that were shaped into wayang figures.

The experience, established in his memories, reappears through spontaneous mechanism and becomes visible in images of his art of painting as he grows up. Based on the experience Teja is presenting his artwork in an exhibition entitled “Fragments of Subconscious Memory”, wherein he includes strange, peculiar but at the same time unique objects, and actually it is the uniqueness that makes his artwork fascinating.

As a provider of an art creativity space, we proudly introduce a hidden potential of a highly creative young artist who has created artworks of highly characterized and aesthetic qualities. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to Teja Astawa for his exceptional co-operation, and Wayan Seriyoga Parta, the curator who has accompanied the artist’s creative artwork process since the very first day of its preparation up to the execution of this exhibition.

Hopefully, Teja’s artwork representation in this exhibition may perhaps offer contribution to contemporary art development.

Bila ada yang mengira bahwa simbolisme religius Hindu-Bali tidak lagi menjadi sumber kreativitas yang orisinal, pelukis Ketut Budiana (60) kuasa membuktikan hal yang sebaliknya. Seniman asal Padangtegal, Ubud ini, tercermin dari karya-karyanya, mampu melakukan transformasi atas teknik, ikonografi dan tematik. Hasilnya adalah suatu dunia fantastik yang khas dirinya, merefleksikan filsafat kosmis Bali sebagai pertarungan kekal antara kekuatan-kekuatan magis nan fantastis. Dengan kata lain, warisan kolektif masyarakat komunal, telah berhasil sedemikian rupa diolahnya menjadi sebentuk ekspresi yang individual.

Dalam pameran tunggal kali ini, akan dihadirkan karya-karya terpilih Ketut Budiana, dengan beragam tema yang mengambarkan pula tahapan-tahapan pergulatannya selama ini. Sebagai pelukis yang terbilang matang, buah ciptanya memperoleh apresiasi yang luas. Berulang diundang pameran di museum dan galeri tersohor di Jepang, Australia (1977), Amerika Serikat (1990,1992, 1995), Singapura (1994) dan Bercelona (1998). Seniman bersahaja ini menerima berbagai penghargaan nasional dan internasional. Sehari-hari ia tetap tekun menjalani tugas tradisinya: membuat sarana dan prasarana upacara, serta aktif dalam berbagai kegiatan ritual lainnya
