This initiative is a continuation of the ongoing effort to rebuild this region and its livelihood, particularly the village of Tembi.

Located 8.5 km south from the centre of Yogyakarta, Tembi is world-renown for its quality crafts produced by artisans in cottage industries spread throughout the village. Building on this solid reputation, entrepreneur and art lover Warwick Purser is establishing this gallery dedicated to contemporary art under the curatorial oversight of Valentine Willie, a curator and gallerist with galleries in Malaysia and Singapore.

The wealth of talent in Yogyakarta makes it the undisputed artist’s capital of Indonesia. Buyers, however, seek out only a handful of successful artists. Few collectors are aware of over 10,000 artists here who create unique and worthy work.

By presenting the best among Indonesia’s lost generation of overlooked artists as well as the new generation of up and coming young artists, Tembi Contemporary promises to be the incubator for pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. Tembi Contemporary will also encourage artist residencies, artist exchange programs and travel grants that enable local artists to gather valuable overseas experience.

Started in October 1997, CGartspace has since tried to bring together art and a mall’s activities, with her strong contemporary emphasis, in the hope to revitalize art or the space where art is displayed. CGartspace tries to bring art closer to the public, by the creation of a more accessible art space.

Besides collaborated events with various galleries and institutions, CGartspace also runs its own independent programs. We are constantly seeking to promote Indonesia’s artists who have developed a consistent vocabulary of form that is well crafted and original. Each of our artist stands out for his or her technical talent, poetic, insight and aesthetic to convey an inner world of imagination and inspiration.

However, all these activities begin with the aim of presenting art in a different form, so that the public is familiar with art and it becomes part of their daily lives. For such reason, the art activities have to be placed at spaces that can be easily accessed by the public.

At that time , the existing commercial galleries in Bali did not consider that the work of Sanggar Dewata Indonesia artists could be easily sold. These artists were young, creative, and often experimented with new techniques and aesthetic concepts. It was difficult for them to find a venue to exhibit their work in Bali, and for this reason,Sika decided to found the Sika Contemporary Art Gallery as an exhibition venue for Sanggar Dewata Indonesia artists.

The gallery program focusses on temporary exhibitions and the promotion of contemporary Indonesia fine art . Sika Gallery holds at east three exhibitions of work by overseas artists annually, as well as a number of exhibitions by Indonesian artists. The gallery has become a prestigious exhibition venue with a reputation for showing work by artists with a high level of creativity and innovation. From 1996 to the present, Sika Contemporary Art Gallery has held exhibitions by artists from Indonesia, Japan, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, England, Austria, Lithuania and the USA.

Sika Gallery participates actively in the development of the arts in Bali, as part of the international art scene. Sika Gallery provides an exhibition space for creative, forward-thinking Balinese artists, especially those who have displayed skill in multi – media arts and who remain closely identified with the spirit of Balinese art and culture.

To motivate and stimulate the creativity of Balinese artists , we invite artists from other parts of Indonesia and overseas to exhibit at Sika Gallery. Through our annual exhibition schedule, we encourage the growth and development of the arts in Bali.

While it can be said that all creative people are artists in their own particular way, those who are artists must be creative. The quality of an artwork can be measured by its level of creativity. By “creativity” I mean the creation of something new which has the potential to transform and break down traditional, standard ways of doing things , loosening the chains which limit freedom of expression and representation . Artistic development is the same as creative development.

Considering our commitment to actively, encourage artistic development , we have chosen to create an environment which gives creative , talented artists an opportunity to exhibit at Sika Gallery and to participate in international art events. Each year, we hold six exhibitions by Balinese artists , three exhibitions by artists from other parts of Indonesia, and three exhibitions by overseas artists.

This exhibition schedule results in a comparative study of work by artists of various nationalities. In particular , we hope to create an environment which encourages and inspires contemporary Balinese artists to be more willing to experiment with new techniques and ways of thinking in their artistic endeavours.

BIASA ART SPACE , BALI

Art of Asia is no longer in need of a mere discovering of new artists, but increasingly becomes capable of receiving attention from the position of playing a vital part in the development of a new global contemporary culture.

Contemporary art spaces and galleries play an important role in this new development, particularly when they take on great responsibility in working closely with artists on a long-term basis, by offering them unremitting support for developing their work in a discursive and critically engaged environment, and by setting up structures that will allow their work to become appreciated within an international setting. Since its founding in 2005, Biasa Art Space has grown out to play an important role in fostering some of the most significant new developments in contemporary Indonesian art, and working closely with prominent emerging artists and curators to help ascertain a new introduction to contemporary art in Indonesia now.

Many projects have been realized each year, including solo-, group exhibitions, performances, site-specific- and community projects, often accompanied by discussions and artist’ talks. We also curate and/or organize exhibitions and projects in other venues and abroad.

In its bid to seek and develop discourse, Cemeti Art House not only operates as a platform for the latest developments, but organizes and facilitates specific projects and connects artists with other professionals and work relative to specific communities (for example ‘art of Bamboo’ 2002, ‘Choose your own public: Playground’ 2005 / Counter Attract’ 2005, ‘Traditional Performing Arts program’ at five villages with Ford Foundation Network 2007 / 2008).

Since 2006, Cemeti Art House opened the residency program LANDING SOON. During each residency period of three months, artists are ‘landing’ in Yogyakarta. Local as well as global issues are researched through different themes, visions and conditions.

Contemporary art in Indonesia can be seen as the form, concern, view and reflection of artists to issues developing in society. Through their work artists criticize and depict general phenomena in the society, whilst others express individual and personal approaches to their reality. These ideas and themes are expressed through a diverse range of media.

The Cemeti Art House building was designed in 1999 by the architect Eko Agus Prawoto. Local-global, traditional-modern, art-non art, individual-collective, natural-manufactured, crafted-industrial, conventional-innovative are the paradoxes reflected in its architectural construction.
