Ubud, Bali, from 7pm on Saturday May 1, Gaya Art Space in Sayan, one of Bali’s most exciting art and design establishments and exhibition spaces, will host an evening of art in action featuring some of the finest artists currently working in Bali. World famous abstractionist and _King of Action Painting_ Theos will splash and daub his way across a 10,5 x 2,25 metre canvas, while Nico Vrielink, one of the greatest large-format portraitists working on this or any island will create a very different work on an adjacent wall. Alongside will be Ukraine-born, award winning portrait painter Galina Schierholz, who is well known for her lush, evocative works; the internationally celebrated Bali-born artist, Ida Bagus Indra, and his long time artistic collaborator, poet and painter John O’Sullivan. While the artists work, accompanied by the sounds of the fabulous Jazz Café Bali Blues Band, the audience is invited to sit back and watch while enjoying a wonderful candle-lit buffet dinner. At the end of the evening, action will turn to auction as a bidding war for the finished pieces begins. All proceeds will go to the Balinese children’s scholarship program at the Pelangi Community School in Ubud.
Well-known art expert Bruce W. Carpenter will take on the role of auctioneer in what promises to be a spectacular evening of creativity and fun. As Bruce says: _This event is special because it features acclaimed artists painting in a diverse variety of styles. Ida Bagus Indra is well known for his dynamic depictions of dancers, women and children. Dutch artist Nico Vrielink paints large often sensuous portraits. Theos is an action painter, the equivalent of a wild jazz band who thrives on improvisations. While the talented John O’Sullivan comes from a point of abstract chaos and freedom inspired by the likes of Cy Twombly and Conceptual Art without pretense_.
Theos – In addition to his studio practice, over the last decades Prof. Dr. Theos M. B. Sijrier (Columbia University) has set out to develop the performance potential of gestural abstraction, in the process justly earning himself the title _the king of action painting’.
