The body has its own language. It requires no arrangement of words to communicate. Born as a husk devoid of assigned meaning, a shell allowing the soul to be present in this universe of action and reaction, the body is a starting point: the blank canvas of human expression.

At a time when the contemporary life of Indonesia tends to invalidate the physical aspects of humanity, it is important to welcome the presence of young artists such as Lovis Ostenrik who explores the various possibilities of the body’s expression.

Lovis’ exploration began with the dynamic movement of a dancer’s body jumping in mid-air. From among hundreds of jumps, a number of surprising moments have been captured, especially when the shadows begin to tell other stories.

“VISTO” is an array of moments crafted and created by Lovis Ostenrik from body and light. While the works in his first solo exhibition titled faces (Penang, 2007) presented the facial expressions of the island dwellers, this time the artist preserves body language while as much as possible setting meaning aside.

Lovis Ostenrik (Herdecke, West Germany, 1982) is an actor and photographer who has spent recent years largely behind-the-scenes managing and documenting cultural and performance projects. He participated in the summer program of the Water Mill Center in Southampton, New York and worked as the personal assistant to Robert Wilson, America’s avant-garde stage director and playwright.

“Working with and around Robert Wilson helped me build knowledge of intercultural exchange and understanding. Traveling while working for Wilson I had the opportunity to observe new surroundings through photography. Encouraged by this I started exploring the possibilities in this field.” — Lovis Ostenrik

Lovis Ostenrik’s first solo photography exhibition, faces (Alpha Utara Gallery, Penang, 2007) was met with critical acclaim. Koong Gallery proudly introduces this emerging talent through visto, his second solo exhibition.
