<p>Awal Adalah Akhir merupakan sebuah pameran dari penelitian yang sedang berlangsung oleh Fulbright Fellow dan Allison Leigh Holt, seniwati residensi Cemeti.</p>
<p>Diawali pada tahun 2008 dan sekembalinya ke Jawa pada tahun 2009, Holt secara independen meneliti metafisika Jawa dan kognisi, seperti halnya metode tradisional yang memungkinkan manusia untuk mengalami realitas melampaui batasan-batasan persepsi manusia normal.<span id="more-1892"></span> Menjalani residensi di Cemeti sejak bulan Maret hingga Juli, Holt bekerjasama dengan beberapa artisan lokal menciptakan suatu bentuk karya baru: menggunakan diagram-diagram dan video/patung, menjelajahi bagaimana konsep-konsep tersebut bersilangan dengan visinya sendiri, yang juga terinformasi oleh batasan samar antara teori ilmiah yang ada dan fiksi ilmiah.</p>
<p>Pameran berlangsung pada tanggal 11 &#8211; 25 Agustus di Rumah Seni Cemeti. Karya-karya terdahulunya dapat dilihat di www.oillyoowen.com.</p>
<p>Seniman dan artisan yang memberikan dukungan untuk terselenggaranya pameran ini adalah: Badari Mustaq, Budi &#8216;Iyok&#8217; Prakosa, Desiree Aditya, Eko Prawoto, Gunawan Maryanto (Cindil), Hendra &#8216;Blangkon&#8217; Priyadhani, Leon De Lorenzo, Maryono, Satria Budi Kurniawan.</p>

<p>Tomoko Mukaiyama has been engaged by prestigious orchestras and ensembles, among others the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, the London Sinfonietta, the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. She has collaborated with film directors, designers, architects, dancers and photographers, such as Ian Kerkhof, Marina Abramovic, MERZBOW, Kim Ito and Jirí Kylián.<br />
Ten years ago Tomoko Mukaiyama started working as a visual artist. She used her experience as a concert pianist to create her first installation piece in a concert hall. She gave new meaning to the concert hall as a location with her project ‘Amsterdam x Tokyo’ (2000) ‘for you’ (2002) and studied the absence and presence of composer, audience and pianist in her installation<span id="more-1335"></span> ‘you and bach’ that she made for the Sydney Biennale in 2006. In 2007 she created a fashion installation for her and her piano in ‘Show me your second face’. Her music installation ‘Mo-Ichido’ (2008) included the experience of scent of organic odours and perfume. In the beginning of 2009 she launched her new cd-art book with her late husband photographer Philip Mechanicus. Her current project ‘wasted’ tours a year and a half to five locations all over the world.</p>

<p>Tomoko Mukaiyama seringkali dilibatkan oleh berbagai orkestra dan ansambel prestisius, diantaranya adalah Ensemble Modern di Frankfurt, London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Intercontemporain dan Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Ia pernah bekerjasama dengan para sutradara film, perancang, arsitek, penari, maupun fotografer, seperti Ian Kerkhof, Marina Abramovic, MERZBOW, Kim Ito dan Jirí Kylián.<br />
Sepuluh tahun yang lalu Tomoko Mukaiyama mulai berkarya sebagai seorang seniwati visual. Ia menggunakan pengalamannya sebagai pemain piano khusus konser untuk menciptakan instalasi pertamanya di sebuah gedung konser. Ia memberikan makna baru pada gedung yang digunakan sebagai lokasi pameran dalam proyeknya ‘Amsterdam x Tokyo’ [2000], ‘for you’ [2002], dan mempelajari ketidakhadiran maupun kehadiran komponis, penonton dan pianis dalam instalasi ‘you and bach’ yang ia buat untuk Sydney Biennale pada tahun 2006. Di tahun 2007 ia menciptakan instalasi fesyen untuknya dan pianonya dalam ‘Show me your second face’. Instalasi musiknya, ‘Mo-Ichido’ (2008,) memasukkan pengalaman wewangian parfum dan bebauan organik. Pada awal tahun 2009 ia meluncurkan cd buku seninya yang baru yang dibuat bersama mendiang suaminya Philip Mechanicus, seorang fotografer. Persinggungan Rosalie dengan seni berakar dari kegelisahan pribadinya tentang gagasan bahwa manusia adalah makhluk yang rapuh dan secara konstan mengalami perubahan. Setiap pertemuan—dengan orang lain, dengan waktu, benda, media, dsb—dimaknai Rosalie sebagai daya yang berpotensi membentuk manusia, secara fisik maupun psikologis. Karya-karyanya berkisar seputar gagasan tentang facade dan ‘diri’ di balik tabir itu: bagaimana manusia, atas kesadaran tentang kerapuhannya, menciptakan tameng-tameng, pencitraan yang semu, dan mengaplikasikan kontrol yang kuat, yang didorong dari dalam atau dari luar dirinya. Karya-karya Rosalie bergerak dari wacana kontrol diri kepada upaya-upaya membebaskan diri dari cengkaman yang menyesakkan itu, dan apa yang akan terjadi bila manusia bebas dari kontrol.</p>
<p>Tinggal di Yogyakarta, bagi Rosalie, adalah pengalaman kebudayaan yang nyata berbeda dengan yang dimilikinya sebelumnya. Pengalaman ini membuatnya menguji kembali dirinya sendiri dan caranya membuat karya. Juga membuatnya mempertimbangkan ulang dan mengembangkan <span id="more-420"></span>tema-tema kerapuhan manusia, facade, ketanakaran, dan bagaimana orang mempengaruhi dan memapari orang lain lewat interaksi antar-personal. Pengembangan itu terujud dalam karya di mana dia berusaha berinteraksi dengan orang lain pada tataran personal dan intim. Rosalie memilih objek dan situasi sehari-hari sebagai bahasa ungkap pengalamannya di sini, seperti gula, kartu nama, dan kamar tidurnya sendiri.</p>
<p>Rosalie Monod de Froideville lahir di Breda, 1978. Menyelesaikan pendidikannya di jurusan Seni Murni, Willem de Kooning Academie of Arts, Rotterdam.</p>
<p><em><strong>Wiyoga Muhardanto</strong></em><br />
Medium tiga dimensional menjadi pilihan Wiyoga semenjak masa kuliah. Pada karya-karya sebelumnya, Wiyoga kerap kali berangkat dari wacana konsumerisme dan isu fetish-isme produk pada masyarakat urban, khususnya kaum sosialita. Bagi Wiyoga, fenomena ini berdampak secara psikologis terhadap kalangan modern. Wiyoga banyak mengeksplorasi gagasan yang ia terjemahkan melalui parodi maupun ironi yang ia ciptakan dalam karyanya. Benda keseharian semacam kendaraan, benda elektronik, atau produk fesyen pernah ia ciptakan dan maknai ulang, sesuai gagasannya.</p>
<p>Menjalani program residensi di Rumah Seni Cemeti, bagi Wiyoga, sama dengan keluar dari zona nyamannya dalam berkarya. Membeludaknya aktivitas seni rupa di Yogyakarta seperti pameran, bermunculannya galeri dan ruang alternatif, bengkel produksi karya, dan artisan, adalah fenomena yang mengusik Wiyoga selama berada di Yogyakarta. Hiruk-pikuk dunia seni rupa oleh banyaknya seniman muda dan senior dalam memproduksi karya ditanggapinya dengan karya instalasi, mural, dan beberapa medium baru yang belum pernah ia coba sebelumnya. Ia mencoba mengeksplorasi gagasan ini sedemikian rupa melalui proses reduplikasi-modifikasi, yang kerap dilakukannya selama ini.</p>
<p>Wiyoga Muhardanto lahir di Jakarta, 1984. Menyelesaikan studinya di Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain ITB, minat utama Seni Patung.</p>

<p>“In an unproblematic sense garbage is leftover matter, it is what remains when the good, fruitful, valuable, nourishing and useful has been taken. Appropriation is the mother of garbage.In another guise this is seen as human propensity for differentiation (a complicated way of saying we choose or accept something whilst rejecting something else) that inaugurates a lifetime of cutting-off, disconnection and removal. Nevertheless, these activities become the principal means of marking of the valuable and the worthy, and this sense differentiation is what establishes culture.” (Scanlan, John On Garbage ReaktionBooks, London, 2005 pg 13)</p>

<p>When I first saw a photograph of Piyungan a few years ago, I was struck by the resemblance the cattle and people sifting though the waste bore to Van Gogh’s Gleaners. The image was almost idyllic until closer inspection revealed the nature of the matter from which this landscape was composed, a landscape of garbage. Gleaning was once a practice undertaken by the poor in Europe, following the harvest and collecting unwanted leftovers. This practice has virtually disappeared in industrialized nations. Fascinated by the difference between the barren and invisible landfill sites in my own country, and the chaotic and inhabited landscape of Piyungan, I determine to come and see this place for my self.</p>
<p>That people and cattle should live and work amongst waste raises the questions of how all this stuff came to be discarded, when it obviously still contain much that is sustaining and of value. The scale of the waste is awe inspiring; it is in installation of major proportion, made up of the most intriguing and disgusting items juxtaposed in random relationships that bear no reference to their origins.</p>
<p>In conversations with a local I was told a mountain of waste could be as deep as 500 meters and covers an area of around 80 acres . in 2010, the site is anticipated to be unable to hold anymore, and the steady stream of garbage truck will cease to bring their loads. Much of this waste is plastic and will never biodegrade. The piyungan mountain of waste will remain as a monument to consumption, to loss of desire.</p>
<p>Finally standing on this mountain, I began to see my position in relation to this place, and to the role of the artist in creating desire, consumption and excess and ultimately, waste. To consider the commoditization of art itself, where the reputation of the artist, the dealer, the gallery, replace and over ride intent and original message contained in the work of art, if ever there was one. In tracing the hand of the artist, the designer, the manufacture, the trader and the consumer, the constant desire to upgrade and replace worthy commodities maybe revealed.</p>
<p>In relation to this, I invited a number of artist to come with me to piyungan landfill site and make works which responded to these notions. Each artist has responded in differently and intersected with the underlying themes in diverse and complex ways. Each has found experience of actually visiting and standing of this mountain of waste, amongst the people and the animals that leave there, to be challenging, revealing and inspiring. In presenting their works. We hope to share this with a broader audience and inspire a dialogue which resonates beyond the gallery walls.</p>

Many projects have been realized each year, including solo-, group exhibitions, performances, site-specific- and community projects, often accompanied by discussions and artist’ talks. We also curate and/or organize exhibitions and projects in other venues and abroad.</p>
<p>In its bid to seek and develop discourse, Cemeti Art House not only operates as a platform for the latest developments, but organizes and facilitates specific projects and connects artists with other professionals and work relative to specific communities (for example ‘art of Bamboo’ 2002, ‘Choose your own public: Playground’ 2005 / Counter Attract’ 2005, ‘Traditional Performing Arts program’ at five villages with Ford Foundation Network 2007 / 2008).</p>
<p>Since 2006, Cemeti Art House opened the residency program LANDING SOON. During each residency period of three months, artists are ‘landing’ in Yogyakarta. Local as well as global issues are researched through different themes, visions and conditions.</p>
<p>Contemporary art in Indonesia can be seen as the form, concern, view and reflection of artists to issues developing in society. Through their work artists criticize and depict general phenomena in the society, whilst others express individual and personal approaches to their reality. These ideas and themes are expressed through a diverse range of media.</p>
<p>The Cemeti Art House building was designed in 1999 by the architect Eko Agus Prawoto. Local-global, traditional-modern, art-non art, individual-collective, natural-manufactured, crafted-industrial, conventional-innovative are the paradoxes reflected in its architectural construction.</p>
