MY FAVOURITE SINS
Lugas Syllabus – Imam Santoso
“We take simple images and fill them with meaning.”
“We are just sharing experiences through these pictures, the intimate and provocative things that friends share.”
Like the storyboards for modern Japanese “Manga” or “The Simpsons”, the younger artists of Jogyakarta are creating a stylized tableau of contemporary life. Seen through the eyes of this twenty-something generation the world is a crazy mixed up place where ugly paradox and ruthless selfishness reigns. Don’t be fooled by the soft acrylic tones and plastic images, for embedded in these popsicle scenes are subtle protests and cries for help in an age awash in media stimulation but bereft of answers.

IWAN WIDJONO: THE FARMER SERIES
“An artist can express something which is so personal or social yet still his function is the megaphone of the human conscience”
“PUBLIC! I think public is dead! The public is dependant on the market that is controlled by multinational corporations, IMF, World Bank, and includes United Nations, Stock Exchange, TVs, political issues/rumors, etc! Public have no power anymore, all controlled by market and weapon, in other way- controlled by fear and consumerism!” Iwan Widjono

Tembi Contemporary is pleased to present Sa Langit Mong Bughaw, a group show to first ever feature four artists from the Philippines: Ambie Abaño, Christina Quisumbing Ramilo, Pardo de Leon and Popo San Pascual. Sa Langit Mong Bughaw also stands as the culminating episode of the Valentine Willie
Fine Art Bali Artist Residency.
Translated as “under your blue skies,” “sa langit mong bughaw” is out of a verse from the Philippine National Anthem, Lupang Hinirang. The electic bunch seeks to blend along the poetry behind this patriotric fragment in their varied medium and sentiments. Ambie Abaño, a printmaker, captures faces at the pause of conviction. “Dalangin” is translated to prayer, and the figures and faces at stake are rubbercut print on spandex, grazing at the Filipino’s attention to faith. The reference to classical art, measurements and subtle turn to science is tackled by Pardo de Leon. On the other hand Popo San Pascual, a prodigy of color, explores the reference to hue and, most of all, the kaleidoscopic salvo that is the Filipino culture. Christina Quisumbing Ramilo
