The proliferation of moving image production and its increasing representation on the internet has introduced new ways of transmitting information that intensify the connectedness of agents from different settings–including those within the social change movement. However, there has been very little research on how activists in Indonesia incorporate the developments in video technology into their existing practices, or how they engage with the possibilities of strategic distribution, particularly the various online forms. Indonesia is in a state of transition, politically and socially, but also in relation to the many technologies. Access to video production tools, the internet and mobile technologies, whilst still limited, is increasing dramatically.

The current publication is one outcome of a collaborative research between EngageMedia and KUNCI Cultural Studies Center. The research charts how activists are engaging with these technologies in the Indonesian context, addressing some of the issues of technology-mediated social movements, and exploring the potential and limitations of online video distribution. By analysing its history, mapping the current situation, and considering possibilities for the future, we hope to bring new light to video activism in Indonesia and begin the process of asking many more necessary questions. Hopefully Videochronic serves as a guide for those exploring the social change possibilities of employing new media technologies in many places and also assists those inside Indonesia to reflect on the work done to date, and the many paths emerging.

Biographical Information about Kathrin Becker

Kathrin Becker is a curator and has been director of the Videoforum at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and of the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (N.B.K) in Berlin since 2001/2003.

Having studied art history and Slavonic studies in Bochum, Moscow and St Petersburg and spent two years living in the former Soviet Union and Russia from 1989 to 1991, Kathrin Becker began working as an independent curator.

In 2001 Becker became director of the ‘Videoforum’ in the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, a video archive that now encompasses over 1000 works from the beginnings of video art up to the present day. Besides digitizing the archive’s holdings, she has been responsible for numerous exhibition projects and collaborations with institutions in East and West Europe, in the United States of America and Mexico.

In the last few years Becker has become increasingly interested in the question of the social dependence and political dimensions of art. In this respect the possibilities offered by combining visuality and ideological mood strike her as more interesting than documentary or anti-representative.

Neuer Berliner Kunstverein

N.B.K. is a site of contemporary art and discourse production. It was founded in 1969 with the goal of presenting contemporary fine art to a broader public, and to invite that public to actively participate in cultural processes.

In 1970, n.b.k. founded one of Germany’s first “arthotheks,” from which art enthusiasts can borrow from over 4,000 works of international art from twentieth and twenty first century. Artothek mobil creats exhibitions for public institutions, schools, and businesses. With the Video-Forum, n.b.k. possesses a collection of over 1,000 international art videos that has constantly been expanding its founding in 1972.

Agung Kurniawan – Artistic Director

All this time, Festival is always considered as an art event that spends a lot of money. Meanwhile, to get big amount of fund is not such an easy problem. Not every person able and have the access to get it. KKF tries to make a festival which is made based on context.

The slogan, that we are offered, is “make your own festival / do it yourself Festival”. We started it with movie festival of an artist from Yogyakarta, a little festival with a big purpose, propagandizing local artist as the city asset.

The theme of this Festival Project will change later on; it is starting with film, and the next about sandals, etc. KKF wants to invite other institutions to do the same thing, at their own institutions. Just try to hold the festival relatively in short period of time, so that those festivals are able to build link and synergize to each other, from small turns to big. That is what we expected for.

Introduction by the Curator – Brigitta Isabella

Actually, maybe it is a bit too late, when Kedai Kebun holds Wimo Film and Video Festival as one of the manifestation of the program “do it yourself” Festival. Because Wimo himself is active in making his own video works since 2000 – 2007. And now, Wimo is back to his root; photography. When it was in 2000s, he used the video as his media because the situation and the condition at that time was more efficient and economical for a student, who were not even pass the college at ISI (Indonesia Institute of Arts, in Yogyakarta). Photography as a hobby or even profession, indeed need much bigger fund. Meanwhile, video only need handycam and one mini DV cassette, and then he able to realize a lot more ideas which is jumbled in his head.

With his education on photography, Wimo made video works which were not too different with his photography works. His characteristics are always full of humor, metaphorical, and carry microscopic things in the daily life. Then by video camera, Wimo explored more on editing techniques and interacted with his subjects.

The closeness of Wimo with video cannot be separated from the history of developing video in Indonesia itself. According to the history, the acquaintanceship between the Indonesian and video started in 1962, when the first TV station, TVRI, was established coincided with the Asean Games IV Project. But, different with the existence of television in Europe and America which caused pop arts, fluxes and video art existed as critics to media domination. For tens of years, TVRI dominated and created single autocracy during the New Order era. Even, at that time, video considered as a threat for national stability, because its effect considered able to deprave the nation morality and caused consumerism (for further information, please check Forum Lenteng research in VIDEOBASE, 2009). In 1999 – 2000, not long after the fall of New Order, the global information flow rapidly, along with technological development, such as internet, SMS, and video. Wimo becomes one of young artists who start using video as his media. The other examples artists are Prilla Tania, Ariani Darmawan in Bandung, or RuangRupa Jakarta.

Thereby, even at the beginning of my introduction I wrote a bit too late to hold Wimo Film and Video Festival, Wimo’s videos are still contextual to be discussed. Most of his works have universal characteristic. For example: “Overload”, “A Night with Black Satin”, and “Stand Still” are some videos which give the audiences opportunity to get certain visual impressions. Meanwhile, the social messages, which described metaphorically, can be seen in “Ksatria Penghalau Gelombang” (Wave Herder Knight), “Sabar” (Patient), or “Forget It, Forget It Not.”

Besides video, Wimo also has produced three short movies, which are the three of them had different approaching and characters. “Berlari untuk Entah” (Run for something unknown) is his first movie, which tells about fiction story of a punker who found a handphone belonging to Dangdut singer. The unique about this video is that it is played by real punker and the shooting is at the venue where punkers are hanging-out. Different with Ayis, it is a documenter movie about 13-years-old boy, who grew-up and played-around the Beringharjo market. The difference with regular documenter movie is that Ayis documented his own life with the CCTV camera fitted on his head. In those two movies, which I mentioned above, seem like Wimo is trying to reveal the expression about reality which is recorded in camera. The variety of themes and approaching by Wimo in his work is very interesting to discuss. But of course, don’t easily trust my introduction, just watch and appraise it by yourself. J

=====================

“Make Your Own Festival”
Agung Kurniawan / Direktur Artistik

Semboyan yang kita tawarkan adalah “buat festivalmu sendiri/ do it yourself festival”.

Pengantar Kurator – Brigitta Isabella

Mungkin sebetulnya agak terlambat, ketika Kedai Kebun mengadakan acara Wimo Film and Video Festival sebagai salah satu manifes program do it yourself festival-nya.

Kebanyakan karyanya bersifat universal.

The project extends existing cultural relations by activating: short-term residencies for cultural practitioners from Australia and other southern countries in Indonesia; the mutual development of collaborative cultural projects; and focuses on attracting the participation of a wide audience of public, exhibition viewers, workshop participants, students and general public.
